Houthis Push Toward Bab el-Mandeb as Saudi-Yemen War Reopens
ADEN — Saudi Arabia declared the immediate danger over in Khamis Mushait after another emergency alert on Thursday, but the larger threat is moving south: Houthi forces are advancing toward positions that could give them far greater leverage over Bab el-Mandeb.
Reuters, citing four Yemeni government military sources, reported that the Iran-aligned Houthis are pushing toward Mocha and Dhubab, strategic coastal areas overlooking the narrow passage connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden.
The advance comes as fighting between the Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces increasingly resembles a return to full-scale war after years of relative restraint under the fragile 2022 truce.
Why Bab el-Mandeb Matters
Bab el-Mandeb is not simply another Yemeni battlefield.
It is one of the world’s critical maritime chokepoints, linking Gulf and Asian trade with the Red Sea, Suez Canal and Mediterranean. With Iran already severely disrupting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, greater Houthi control around Bab el-Mandeb could place pressure on both ends of the Gulf-Red Sea energy corridor simultaneously.
That is the strategic danger.
Saudi Arabia has spent years developing Red Sea routes partly to reduce vulnerability to Hormuz. But if Houthi forces can threaten those western routes as well, Riyadh’s geographic escape route becomes less secure.
Saudi Arabia Is Already Under Pressure
Khamis Mushait has faced four emergency alerts within 24 hours. Saudi authorities said the immediate danger had passed Thursday, but recent Houthi missile and drone attacks across southern Saudi Arabia wounded at least 73 people and targeted an air base and energy infrastructure.
The Saudi-led coalition said Wednesday that the Houthis continued targeting Khamis Mushait, Abha and Jazan and promised a response under the principle of self-defense.
