The Sahel’s Juntas Are Building a Shared Information Front With Russian Support

Russia-Backed Sahel Television Network Turns Information Control Into Regional Strategy

The Sahel’s New Information Front

When battlefield results disappoint, controlling the story becomes part of regime survival.

A common narrative platform

Military governments in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger have launched a shared television channel, Tafouk TV, with Russian backing, according to the Financial Times. The outlet promotes the Alliance of Sahel States, highlights government activity and challenges Western coverage of the region’s worsening insurgencies.

The channel sits inside a larger information environment shaped by restrictions on foreign broadcasters, pressure on independent journalists and closer cooperation with Russian media and security networks.

WARYATV assessment

This is more than propaganda in the narrow sense. The three governments are constructing common institutions to turn military alignment into a political identity. A shared broadcaster can synchronize crisis messaging, defend security partnerships and weaken domestic debate over battlefield losses.

The strategy addresses a real problem for the juntas: they promised that removing Western influence would improve security, but jihadist groups continue to operate and, in some areas, expand. Information control helps shift the measure of success from verifiable security outcomes to sovereignty, patriotism and resistance to foreign pressure.

Russian support is valuable because it combines media expertise with diplomatic protection and military cooperation. But it also encourages governments to treat criticism as hostile influence rather than a source of warning about operational failure.

Consequence

The long-term risk is an intelligence trap. Leaders surrounded by favorable reporting may lose access to accurate information about casualties, public anger and militant expansion. A government can dominate television and still lose roads, towns and tax revenue.

The strongest counter is not another foreign propaganda service. It is credible local reporting that distinguishes battlefield fact from official claim and protects journalists able to verify conditions beyond capital cities.
