How Siraad Initiative Is Expanding Women’s Leadership in Somaliland

Siraad Initiative: Empowering Women, Inspiring Leadership, Shaping Somaliland’s Future

From creating spaces for meaningful dialogue to developing the next generation of women leaders, Siraad Initiative is helping build a more inclusive, confident and capable future for Somaliland.

Meaningful social progress begins when people have the knowledge, confidence and opportunity to participate in shaping their own future. In Somaliland, Siraad Initiative has emerged as a locally rooted platform working to expand those opportunities for women and girls.

Established in Hargeisa, Siraad is a women-led initiative dedicated to empowering, promoting and inspiring Somali women and girls through academic dialogue, mentorship, leadership development and community engagement.

At the heart of its work is a simple idea: when women are given space to learn, exchange ideas, build networks and develop their potential, the benefits extend far beyond the individual. Families, institutions and communities become stronger.

Creating Space for Women’s Voices

For Siraad, empowerment means more than organizing events. It means creating environments where women and girls can speak with confidence, challenge assumptions, learn from one another and recognize themselves as active contributors to Somaliland’s future.

Since its official launch in Hargeisa in March 2020, the initiative has focused on supporting young women in their education and careers, strengthening their knowledge and creating meaningful conversations around the issues that affect their lives and communities.

Its approach reflects an important principle: leadership is rarely created overnight. It develops through education, exposure, mentorship, experience and opportunity.

Through its programs, Siraad has brought together young women, professionals, academics, activists and community leaders to exchange perspectives on issues central to Somaliland’s social and institutional development.

Turning Dialogue Into Action

One of Siraad’s defining strengths is its effort to move beyond conversation and translate ideas into practical engagement.

Its activities have addressed women’s leadership and political participation, digital safety, ethical leadership, good governance and wider community awareness.

In 2025, Siraad partnered with the ISIR Institute for a panel discussion examining women’s participation in Somaliland’s parliamentary politics. The event brought together established and emerging women leaders, activists and community members to examine progress, persistent barriers and opportunities for greater participation.

Siraad has also expanded its engagement beyond Hargeisa, including activities in Borama focused on ethical leadership, good governance and the meaningful participation of women and young people in decision-making.

That expansion reflects a broader vision: empowering women cannot be confined to one city or one institution. It must become part of a wider effort to strengthen communities across Somaliland.

Developing the Next Generation of Women Leaders

Women’s leadership sits at the center of Siraad’s mission.

In March 2026, Siraad collaborated with the Somaliland Good Governance Commission and EUCAP Somalia’s Somaliland field office on an International Women’s Day event in Hargeisa recognizing women serving in government and law enforcement.

The gathering brought together women from public institutions, law enforcement, civil society and women’s organizations while creating space for discussion around leadership, public service and participation in decision-making.

For younger women, that visibility has real value.

When girls and young women see other women leading institutions, contributing to policy discussions, serving in government and taking responsibility within their communities, leadership becomes more than an abstract ambition. It becomes something they can imagine for themselves.

Siraad helps create that visibility while connecting aspiration with practical opportunity.

Empowerment Through Knowledge

Siraad’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that knowledge creates opportunity.

Through academic discussions, workshops, mentorship and community engagement, the initiative seeks to equip women and girls with the confidence, information and networks they need to advance their education, careers and participation in public life.

From its earliest activities, Siraad has placed particular emphasis on career development and mentorship for young women.

That focus matters in a country where young women will form an increasingly important part of Somaliland’s future professional workforce, entrepreneurial community, public institutions and civil society.

Rather than viewing women simply as beneficiaries of development, Siraad encourages them to become participants, problem-solvers, decision-makers and leaders.

Building Stronger Communities

Siraad’s work extends beyond leadership development into practical community engagement.

During the COVID-19 period, research documenting civic responses in Somaliland highlighted Siraad’s efforts to reach women working in marketplaces with protective equipment and reliable information at a time when misinformation and unequal access to resources created additional risks.

In 2024, Siraad also participated in a CARE-supported awareness campaign promoting locally sourced school meals. The initiative reached primary schools across Maroodi-Jeex and engaged school communities on nutrition, attendance, academic performance and sustainability.

These activities illustrate the breadth of Siraad’s approach.

Women’s empowerment does not exist in isolation. It intersects with education, health, governance, economic opportunity, digital safety and community development.

Inspiring Possibility

Perhaps Siraad’s most lasting contribution is the culture of possibility it is helping to create.

A young woman who attends a Siraad discussion does more than participate in an event. She enters a network of people with ideas, experience and ambition. She hears from professionals and community leaders. She asks questions, develops relationships and begins to see pathways that may previously have seemed distant.

That is how leadership pipelines are built.

Not through a single conference or workshop, but through repeated exposure to knowledge, mentorship, responsibility and opportunity.

Somaliland’s long-term development will depend in part on how effectively its institutions and communities harness the talents of its entire population. Investing in women and girls therefore is not simply a women’s issue; it is an investment in Somaliland’s human capital and future development.

A Growing Platform for Change

Siraad Initiative represents a strong example of locally driven social development: identify barriers, create spaces for dialogue, connect people with knowledge and convert ideas into practical engagement.

Its evolution from a women-led platform centered on empowerment and academic dialogue into an initiative addressing leadership, governance, digital safety, public service and community development demonstrates what locally rooted organizations can achieve when they remain connected to the communities they serve.

The future of Somaliland will ultimately be shaped by those who are prepared and empowered to participate in it.

Through its investment in women and girls, Siraad Initiative is helping ensure that more women have the confidence, knowledge and opportunity to take their place in that future.
