President Irro Honors Amoud University Graduates, Launches Ambitious Development Agenda for Awdal

The Republic of Somaliland’s President, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro), presided over the 24th graduation ceremony of Amoud University in Borama on the second day of his official visit to Awdal Region. The landmark occasion saw 1,087 students graduate across Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels — a record that underlines the institution’s status as one of the Horn of Africa’s most respected universities.

In his keynote address, President Irro congratulated the graduates, their families, and Amoud’s faculty and administration. He hailed the university as a “distinguished academic establishment” that has shaped generations of Somaliland’s scholars and citizens, transcending national boundaries to earn the trust of countless families.

The President’s appearance carried an added symbolic weight: he attended alongside Ugaas Abdirashid Ugaas Rooble Ugaas Doodi, Awdal’s eminent traditional leader. Irro reminded the gathering that one of his campaign pledges was to secure the Ugaas’s safe and dignified return to his homeland — a promise he declared now fulfilled.

A Bold Package for Awdal’s Future

The graduation ceremony also served as a platform for the President to unveil a sweeping development agenda for Borama and the wider Awdal Region. Designed to strengthen essential services, expand opportunity, and enhance daily life, the initiatives include:

  • Equipping the Grand Hall of Amoud University

  • Building a modern administrative headquarters for Amoud University

  • Allocating land in Hargeisa for Amoud to establish a new campus

  • Completing Borama Airport

  • Supplying Borama General Hospital with an oxygen-generation plant and a modern CT-scan machine

  • Cutting Borama’s water tariff from 15,000 SLSh to 11,000 SLSh per cubic meter

  • Slashing electricity tariffs from $0.73 to $0.59/kWh effective November 2025, with a further reduction to $0.30/kWh in 2026

  • Completing the Xaaji Daahir Cilmi Football Stadium in Borama

  • Constructing and finishing the Baki–Borama road and the Borama–Lawyacaddo road

  • Commencing construction of Lughaya Port

President Irro stressed that these projects were not abstract promises but concrete commitments. “Our government is duty-bound to respond to the needs of our citizens,” he said. “The pledges we made to the people of Awdal are a priority — and they will be delivered.”

A Call for Unity and Cooperation

Closing his remarks, the President appealed to Awdal’s scholars, traditional leaders, institutions, businesses, and broader community to safeguard unity and strengthen cooperation. “Only through solidarity,” he declared, “can we ensure regional prosperity and advance Somaliland’s national development goals.”

The celebrations at Amoud University thus became more than an academic milestone: they signaled a new chapter for Awdal — one of unity, progress, and shared destiny under President Irro’s leadership.
