Irro Cuts the Ribbon: Berbera’s New Water Expansion Switches On
President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) on Thursday inaugurated the Berbera City Water Expansion Project, capping a government-funded push to deliver cleaner, more reliable water to one of Somaliland’s fastest-growing cities.
The ceremony, held during the president’s working visit to Sahil, marked the completion of a project Irro first launched in March 2025. Built to reinforce aging networks and keep pace with rising demand, the expansion is designed to stabilize supply for households and businesses across Berbera.
Speaking to local leaders and residents, Irro framed the upgrade as both a public-health win and an economic enabler for the port city. He said his administration will continue prioritizing basic services and hard infrastructure across every region—“the backbone,” he noted, of broader development.
The announcement drew quick applause from city officials and community groups who have pressed for dependable water access amid rapid growth. Many residents welcomed the move as a quality-of-life boost that will cut daily costs, reduce time spent hauling water, and support small enterprises.
The project also reads as a signal of governing style: hands-on regional engagement paired with visible, nuts-and-bolts delivery. For Berbera, it’s a practical step with outsized impact—cleaner taps today, and a sturdier foundation for tomorrow’s jobs and investment.
