From calling Epstein a “terrific guy” in 2002 to labeling him a “creep” that “nobody cares about” in 2025, Trump’s public statements are a case study in strategic distancing, deflection, and opportunism.

In his pre-presidential days, Trump’s open admiration of Epstein’s lifestyle was undeniable. The infamous quote to New York Magazine—praising Epstein’s taste in “beautiful women… on the younger side”—is the kind of line that would sink any other politician. But Trump, ever the showman, always bets on the short memory of his audience.

Fast forward to 2019. With Epstein in federal custody, Trump repositioned himself, claiming he “wasn’t a fan” and hadn’t spoken to Epstein in 15 years. Yet, within weeks, he was retweeting conspiracies about Bill Clinton’s alleged involvement in Epstein’s death—fueling the fire, while pretending to stand outside the blaze.

By 2020, Trump was floating the possibility Epstein was murdered. By 2023, he hedged: “It’s possible,” but “he probably committed suicide.” That half-in, half-out conspiracy posture defined Trump’s Epstein playbook—feed the doubt, stir the pot, but never take ownership.

But now in 2025, Trump is fuming. The DOJ says there’s no “client list,” and Epstein died by suicide. And Trump? He’s raging at his own supporters, calling the whole thing “bullshit” and a “hoax.” His frustration isn’t about truth—it’s about control. The Epstein narrative, long a useful political weapon, is no longer working for him. Worse, it’s turning on him.

That frustration exploded in his Truth Social post: “We have a PERFECT Administration… and ‘selfish people’ are trying to hurt it, all over a guy who never dies.” Trump’s base—once his echo chamber—is now raising questions he doesn’t want to answer.
