Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announce historic agreements on trade, defense, and diplomacy during the first-ever Somali presidential visit to Azerbaijan.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev solidified a new era of bilateral cooperation during a high-level summit in Baku. This visit—the first by a Somali head of state to Azerbaijan—has set the stage for expanded trade, defense collaboration, and educational exchange, reinforcing both nations’ commitment to shared prosperity.
President Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan’s success in economic transformation and national security, offering Somalia a roadmap for resilience and stability. From infrastructure and port development to defense cooperation and public service reforms, Azerbaijan pledged its support in helping Somalia navigate its own path toward economic revitalization and security enhancement.
Somalia, in turn, extended its strategic advantages to Azerbaijan, positioning itself as a gateway to Africa’s booming markets and a crucial partner in Red Sea and Indian Ocean trade routes. President Mohamud emphasized Somalia’s vast untapped potential, promising to deepen investment ties and leverage Azerbaijan’s expertise in energy, security, and development.
Beyond economic collaboration, the two leaders affirmed their commitment to counterterrorism, defense training, and mutual diplomatic support in international forums. Notably, Azerbaijan has already committed to increasing scholarships for Somali students, further strengthening the foundation of long-term bilateral ties.
With new agreements signed and a commitment to ongoing high-level exchanges, the Azerbaijan-Somalia relationship has entered a transformative phase. The visit marks not just a diplomatic success but a tangible step toward reshaping the geopolitical landscape of both nations. As President Mohamud extended an invitation for President Aliyev to visit Somalia, this emerging alliance could become a defining partnership in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
