Mali’s Army Is Losing the Initiative in the Centre

More Than 100 Soldiers Reportedly Killed in Mali Assault

Mali changed its foreign partners, but the insurgency kept expanding.

An assault with strategic meaning

Sources told Reuters that more than 100 Malian soldiers were killed when Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM fighters attacked a military camp at Dioura. JNIM also claimed attacks around Sévaré and Konna, including pressure against an airport used by military aircraft and drones.

Exact casualty numbers and militant claims remain difficult to verify independently.

Beyond another insurgent raid

JNIM is demonstrating an ability to mass fighters, attack defended positions and pressure aviation infrastructure. That challenges the military government’s argument that removing French and UN forces—and relying on Russian assistance—would restore security.

The threat is no longer confined to remote desert areas. Sustained operations in central Mali could isolate communities, interrupt fuel supplies and bring pressure closer to Bamako.

WARYATV Assessment

Mali’s government controls the state but may be losing operational initiative outside major cities. The decisive indicator is whether JNIM can hold transport corridors and repeatedly neutralize air bases. If it can, the insurgency will begin shaping Mali’s economy as well as its battlefield.
