Woody Allen says Donald Trump was “a very good actor”

The director recalls Trump’s cameo in Celebrity as “a pleasure to work with,” says he voted for Kamala Harris, and jokes he could “do wonders” directing Trump again.

Woody Allen says Donald Trump was “a very good actor” when he appeared in Allen’s 1998 film Celebrity. Speaking on Bill Maher’s Club Random, Allen called Trump “a pleasure to work with… very polite,” adding that the future president “hit his mark” and “had a real flair for show business.”

Trump’s role was brief. In a tongue-in-cheek, scripted exchange, he told a TV reporter he was “working on buying St Patrick’s Cathedral… maybe doing a little rip-down job and putting up a very, very tall and beautiful building.” Allen said the performance showed a “charismatic quality” on camera.

Allen also said he disagrees with “many, almost all” of Trump’s policies and voted for Kamala Harris in 2024. “If he would let me direct him now that he’s president, I think I could do wonders,” he joked, before noting he was “surprised he wanted to go into politics,” calling it “nothing but headaches and critical decisions.”

The director has faced criticism for virtually attending a Moscow film festival last year. Afterward, he said, “when it comes to the conflict in Ukraine, I believe strongly that Vladimir Putin is totally in the wrong.”
