Trump’s DC Crackdown Is Part Political Theater, Part Authoritarian Test

President Donald Trump has taken emergency control of Washington, DC’s police force and deployed National Guard troops to the streets, claiming the capital is overrun by “violent gangs,” “roving mobs” and “drugged-out maniacs.” The reality: official data show violent crime at 30-year lows, with carjackings, gun crimes, and homicides down.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser called the move “unsettling and unprecedented,” pointing out that true emergencies involve unmanageable crime surges — not politically manufactured crises.

This is not Trump’s first such declaration. In recent months, he’s invoked “emergencies” over the economy, energy, and immigration to expand executive powers. Critics see a deepening pattern of militarizing domestic functions and sidestepping local authority. National Capital Region lawmakers warned of “a soft launch of authoritarianism.”

The timing also serves Trump politically. It distracts from controversies dogging his administration, including a MAGA base backlash over unreleased Jeffrey Epstein files. Standing beside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump told police they could “do whatever the hell they want” — a line tailor-made for conservative media.

While residents in some high-crime neighborhoods might welcome extra security, opponents argue the precedent is dangerous. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who saw federal troops deployed in her city earlier this year, called DC “a test case” for future power grabs.

“This is an abuse of our troops,” Bass said, “and an overreach of presidential powers.”
