Burkina Faso Junta fires prime minister amid escalating instability

Traore’s regime dissolves government as the Sahel nation grapples with rising insurgency and humanitarian crisis.

Burkina Faso’s military junta, led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, has abruptly dismissed interim Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachim Kyelem de Tambela and dissolved the government. The announcement, made via an official decree, provided no clear explanation for the ousting but signals a deeper crisis within the administration as the nation struggles with mounting security and humanitarian challenges.

This political shakeup comes as Burkina Faso faces relentless Islamist insurgencies that have plagued the Sahel region for over a decade. With militant groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS controlling over half of the country, the government has been unable to secure its territory or protect its people. Violence has displaced more than 2 million citizens—many of them children—while widespread hunger pushes tens of thousands to the brink of starvation.

Traore, who seized power in a coup in 2022, had promised to address these challenges better than his predecessors. However, under his leadership, the security situation has deteriorated further, with attacks by militants continuing unabated. Human rights groups and analysts have criticized his government for stifling dissent and cracking down on freedom of expression, compounding the nation’s crises.

The dismissal of Tambela and the Cabinet dissolution point to internal fractures within the junta as it struggles to govern amid an unrelenting insurgency and widespread discontent. Members of the dissolved government will remain in their roles temporarily until a new Cabinet is announced. However, without significant progress in restoring security and addressing the humanitarian disaster, Burkina Faso’s future remains deeply uncertain.

Traore’s regime must now contend with growing pressure to stabilize the country, not only from its citizens but also from an increasingly alarmed international community. Whether the junta can fulfill its promises or risks further destabilization remains to be seen.
