WFP Suspends Aid in SSC-Khaatumo Following Looting Incidents

The World Food Program (WFP) has suspended all humanitarian operations in Somalia’s SSC-Khaatumo region following two significant looting incidents this month. The theft of critical food aid has left tens of thousands of vulnerable people without assistance in one of Somalia’s most fragile areas.

The stolen supplies, meant to assist malnourished children, pregnant women, and displaced families, were distributed through local humanitarian partners operating in Buhodle, Las Anod, and Taleh districts. The WFP described the decision as a necessary but difficult response to escalating insecurity and called on local authorities to take urgent action to restore safety and protect humanitarian workers.

SSC-Khaatumo has long been a hotspot of political and clan-related tensions, despite its recent recognition by Somalia’s federal government. The region has faced continued instability due to periodic clashes between SSC-Khaatumo forces and Somaliland troops. In recent weeks, intense fighting near Qorilugud has caused numerous casualties and displaced civilians, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

The suspension comes as Somalia faces one of its most severe humanitarian challenges, with millions across the country battling acute food insecurity fueled by conflict, climate shocks, and displacement. Humanitarian organizations like the WFP are critical to alleviating suffering, but ongoing insecurity disrupts their ability to deliver aid effectively.

Former Puntland Minister Mohamed S. Farole has urged authorities to depoliticize aid and suggested the establishment of a WFP office in Las Anod to improve coordination and ensure that assistance reaches those in need. He emphasized that the looting of aid supplies undermines relief efforts and adds to the suffering of already vulnerable populations.

The WFP’s suspension of operations highlights the urgent need for local authorities to prioritize security and governance reforms to ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid. Without such measures, the region’s most vulnerable communities risk deeper food insecurity and worsening humanitarian conditions.
