Israel Launches ‘Limited’ Operations Against Hezbollah Targets in Southern Lebanon

The Israeli military has initiated a “limited, localized” ground operation against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, according to a statement released by the Israeli army early Tuesday. The military confirmed that these operations are part of a preemptive effort to neutralize Hezbollah militants and infrastructure deemed an “immediate threat” to communities in northern Israel.

The raids are being conducted in villages near the Israeli border, as part of a broader strategy outlined by Israel’s General Staff and Northern Command. The plan, for which Israeli Civil Defense forces have been preparing for months, focuses on precision strikes supported by targeted intelligence, aiming to degrade Hezbollah’s ability to launch attacks.

The escalation follows Israel’s previous declaration of its northern communities as a “closed military zone,” signaling the possibility of further incursions into Lebanon. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, has ramped up its activities along the border since Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7. Israel has since accused Hezbollah of firing nearly 9,000 rockets into its northern regions, in a show of solidarity with Hamas.

The United States has remained closely involved, with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant discussing the situation by phone. Both sides agreed on the importance of dismantling Hezbollah’s attack capabilities along the border. The Pentagon emphasized that while military operations continue, diplomatic efforts must follow to ensure a stable resolution.

President Joe Biden, amid growing concern over further regional escalation, called for an immediate cease-fire, expressing discomfort with reports of a potential ground invasion. He has emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution to prevent further civilian suffering on both sides of the border. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to advancing diplomacy in Lebanon, while also continuing efforts to negotiate a cease-fire in Gaza.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has warned Israeli troops stationed along the Lebanese border to prepare for a broader conflict with Hezbollah. While acknowledging the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as an “important step,” Gallant made clear that Israel’s military campaign is far from over. The minister assured military leaders that all available resources—from airstrikes to ground forces—would be deployed if necessary.

In response, Hezbollah’s deputy chief, Naim Kassem, stated that the group is “ready for any ground confrontation.” Hezbollah has been fortifying its position in southern Lebanon since the 2006 war with Israel, and the group remains a significant military force in the region. While Hezbollah has sustained losses, including senior leadership figures, the group still presents a formidable challenge, according to Israeli analysts.

International efforts to de-escalate the situation are intensifying. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot arrived in Lebanon earlier this week, urging an immediate halt to Israeli strikes. Saudi Arabia has also expressed concern, calling for the protection of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Lebanon has been severely affected by the ongoing conflict, with over 1,000 deaths and 6,000 injuries reported in the past two weeks, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry. Approximately 250,000 people have been displaced, many of them seeking refuge in makeshift shelters. The devastation has spread across both sides of the border, with tens of thousands of Israelis also fleeing their homes in the northern regions.

Amid the rising tensions, Israel has bolstered security at its embassies worldwide, preparing for potential retaliatory attacks by Hezbollah or Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Analysts warn of the possibility of attacks against Israeli or Jewish targets abroad, drawing parallels to Hezbollah’s 1992 bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires.

As the conflict enters a new phase, Israel maintains its objective to weaken Hezbollah and secure its northern border. At the same time, global powers are pressing for diplomacy to prevent a wider regional war. The situation remains fluid, with military operations intensifying, while efforts to broker peace struggle to gain traction in a volatile region long plagued by conflict.
