UN Staff Forced to Relocate Amid Escalating Conflict
The United Nations has suspended its aid operations in the Gaza Strip due to the latest Israeli military evacuation orders. On Monday, a senior U.N. official reported that the organization was no longer able to operate in Gaza, though they stressed they would not be leaving the territory.
This disruption follows new evacuation orders issued by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for parts of Deir al-Balah, a central Gaza area where the U.N. had relocated its core operations in May after being ordered to evacuate Rafah in southern Gaza. According to the U.N., Sunday’s order marks the 16th evacuation directive issued this month.
The U.N. official, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the situation, explained that the organization had only a few hours to relocate international and Palestinian staff, their dependents, and essential equipment to a designated safe zone in Al-Mawasi. Due to the rapid pace of the evacuation, some equipment was left behind and has yet to be retrieved as the IDF has moved into the evacuated areas.
The U.N. estimates that approximately 86% of Gaza is now under evacuation orders, forcing over 2 million people into a smaller area with severely limited basic services. The humanitarian situation in the region is increasingly dire, with the large-scale displacement putting additional strain on resources and infrastructure.
Despite the evacuation orders, UNRWA, the U.N. agency that assists Palestinian refugees, has continued to provide some health care services in central Gaza. They, along with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, are preparing for a crucial polio vaccination campaign set to begin on Saturday. This campaign aims to vaccinate 640,000 children in Gaza with double doses of the vaccine in response to recent detections of the virus in environmental samples and a confirmed case in a 10-month-old baby—the first in Gaza in 25 years.
The UN’s aid operations in Gaza have been significantly impacted by the recent Israeli evacuation orders, with ongoing efforts to find a secure base for continued operations. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen as the area under evacuation orders grows, and critical health initiatives, such as the polio vaccination campaign, face significant challenges amidst the conflict.
