European Union and UK Maritime Forces Respond to Renewed Piracy Threat Off Somali Coast
London (waryatv.com) -Somali pirates have resurfaced, marking a significant resurgence in pirate activity that has been dormant since 2018. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency reported that a merchant vessel was boarded 420 nautical miles southeast of Merca, Somalia. This incident is part of a worrying trend noted since late last year.
The European Union’s anti-piracy force, Operation Atalanta, flagged a possible pirate attack on the Liberian-flagged merchant vessel Basilisk off the coast of Somalia. According to the EU force, the suspected attack occurred about 380 nautical miles east of the Somali capital Mogadishu as the vessel was heading north.
“One of Atalanta warships in the vicinity has been the first actor to respond. EUNAVFOR ATALANTA is taking the appropriate actions to respond,” the EU force said in a statement.
The UKMTO reported receiving information about the boarding of the vessel by an unknown number of unauthorized individuals from two small craft. This incident underscores the reemergence of Somali pirates who caused havoc in the waters off the east African country’s long coastline between 2008 and 2018.
The resurgence of piracy poses a significant threat to maritime security in the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. Both European and UK maritime forces are on high alert, taking steps to protect merchant vessels and ensure the safety of international shipping routes. The international community watches closely as these developments unfold, mindful of the potential implications for global maritime trade and security.
