Key Ethiopian and Tigray Leaders Meet to Assess Peace Accord Implementation
The Second Strategic Review on the Implementation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA) begins today, according to a communiqué posted on the TPLF’s official Facebook page. Representatives from the Ethiopian Federal Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) are attending this crucial evaluation meeting, facilitated by the African Union.
The TPLF’s Central Committee has paused its ongoing internal meetings to focus on the African Union review. Senior party leaders have been preparing documents and conducting evaluations in anticipation of this strategic review.
This meeting follows the initial review held on March 11 in Addis Ababa, where both parties reaffirmed their commitment to the CoHA and agreed to regular consultations. Last week, the US State Department announced that Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Mike Hammer, would attend the Second Strategic Review. The United States remains dedicated to supporting lasting peace between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray Interim Regional Administration.
The continuation of these strategic reviews underscores the ongoing efforts and challenges in maintaining and building upon the peace established by the Pretoria Agreement. The involvement of international observers, such as the US Special Envoy, highlights the global interest in stabilizing the region.
This strategic review is a critical step towards ensuring the CoHA’s objectives are met, fostering dialogue, and addressing any ongoing or emerging challenges. The collaborative effort between the Ethiopian government, TPLF, and international partners aims to build a sustainable and lasting peace in the region.
