China Is Preparing Robots for the Battlefield — But the Real Revolution Is Bigger Than Humanoids

China does not yet have a robot army. But PLA researchers are already testing humanoids for infiltration, reconnaissance and urban combat, while China dominates global humanoid production. The future battlefield may not replace soldiers — it may put machines in front of them.

BEIJING — China is moving rapidly to turn advances in commercial robotics into military capability, with the People’s Liberation Army studying humanoid robots for reconnaissance, infiltration, urban assaults and eventually direct combat roles.

A Reuters review of more than 100 Chinese military procurement notices, studies, patents and government records found that PLA interest accelerated sharply in 2025 and 2026. Chinese researchers are already modeling mixed assault teams in which humanoids, robot dogs and unmanned vehicles operate alongside soldiers to clear buildings and penetrate enemy territory.

The important point, however, is not that China already possesses a science-fiction “robot army.”

It does not.

Reuters found no evidence that armed humanoids have been deployed with operational PLA units, and current machines remain limited by battery life, reliability and the complexity of uncontrolled battlefield environments.

From Support Machines to Combatants

What matters is the direction of travel.

A 2025 National University of Defense Technology study modeled six combat robots operating with infantry during building-clearing operations. Another competition required robots to simulate infiltration behind enemy lines, map terrain and identify targets. PLA commentary has even discussed humanoid systems moving eventually from supporting combat to “primary combat,” while retaining human verification before lethal action.

State-owned defense company Norinco has also developed the Fuxi humanoid, designed for sentry duties, reconnaissance, patrol and dangerous missions, with the option of remote human control.

China’s Industrial Advantage Matters

China possesses something potentially more important than any individual robot: manufacturing scale.

Chinese companies accounted for about 95% of global humanoid robot shipments in 2025, according to BofA Global Research figures cited by Reuters. That gives the PLA access to an enormous domestic ecosystem of motors, sensors, batteries, AI systems and mass-production expertise.

This is where the military implications become serious.

Wars in Ukraine and elsewhere have demonstrated that inexpensive, expendable unmanned systems can sometimes matter more than exquisite weapons produced in small numbers.

China could eventually apply that lesson to ground warfare.

Taiwan Will Be Watching

Urban environments, tunnels, coastal facilities and fortified buildings are precisely where human infantry suffer heavy casualties.

Those are also environments relevant to any future Taiwan conflict.

China’s Eastern Theater Command has already released imagery imagining humanoids and quadruped robots participating in a hypothetical assault against Taiwan. That is not evidence of an operational capability, but it reveals how PLA planners are thinking about future warfare.

The headline should not be “China has a robot army.”

The more important development is that Beijing is building the technological and industrial foundation from which one could eventually emerge.

Humanoid robots may prove too expensive or fragile for many missions. Tracked vehicles, drones and four-legged machines will often be simpler and cheaper.

But China’s strategic advantage could come from integrating all of them into one network — drones above, unmanned vehicles on the ground, robots inside buildings and human commanders controlling the system.

That would change the fundamental calculation of warfare.

A state able to send machines into the most dangerous positions can accept risks that armies dependent entirely on human soldiers cannot.

China is not removing soldiers from warfare yet. It is preparing to reduce how often soldiers have to enter the most lethal parts of it.

The decisive race is therefore not about producing a robot that looks human.

It is about combining AI, sensors, autonomy, communications and mass manufacturing faster than an adversary can counter them.

If China succeeds, future PLA formations may contain fewer soldiers at the point of maximum danger — and far more machines.
