Milei Revives Argentina’s Falklands Claim as Trump Questions US Position on British Sovereignty
Argentina’s Javier Milei says the geopolitical winds are shifting over the Falkland Islands. With Donald Trump openly questioning Washington’s traditional posture toward Britain, Buenos Aires is tightening pressure on UK-linked oil projects and strengthening its military position in the South Atlantic.
Milei Says ‘Winds of Change’ Favor Argentina’s Falklands Claim
BUENOS AIRES — Argentine President Javier Milei has declared that international conditions are becoming more favorable to his country’s claim over the Falkland Islands, pointing to comments by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting Washington could reconsider its longstanding position on the disputed South Atlantic territory.
In a televised national address, Milei said “winds of change” were blowing internationally and argued that Argentina’s growing alignment with the United States could strengthen Buenos Aires’ diplomatic position over the islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas.
“Recently, President Trump declared that the U.S. is re-evaluating its historic position in relation to the Malvinas,” Milei said.
However, Trump has not endorsed Argentine sovereignty.
Asked at the White House whether his administration was reviewing the American position, Trump responded: “I always review every position. That’s just one of many.”
The United States recognizes Britain’s administration of the islands but does not formally take a position on the underlying sovereignty dispute.
Milei nevertheless portrayed Trump’s remarks as politically significant.
“The U.S. is considering this change of position because it knows that Argentina is a reliable partner, aligned with Western values, in a strategically important position that can be a valuable ally in the decades to come,” he said.
Trump’s Frustration With Britain
The issue has acquired additional significance because of Trump’s increasingly public criticism of Britain.
Asked by GB News whether the United States would support Britain during a possible territorial confrontation with Argentina, Trump stopped short of offering an unequivocal commitment.
Instead, he criticized Britain over its role in the Iran conflict, saying London had not provided the assistance Washington requested.
The remarks do not amount to a change in U.S. policy. But for Milei, they provide an opportunity to argue that the diplomatic environment surrounding the Falklands is becoming less predictable.
Reports of a possible American reassessment first emerged in April, when an internal Pentagon email reportedly included reconsidering the U.S. position among potential measures against NATO countries that declined to participate in the Iran war.
Argentina Targets Falklands Oil
Milei also announced measures intended to increase economic pressure surrounding the islands.
His government plans to accelerate sanctions against companies participating in oil extraction projects around the Falklands.
Milei specifically referred to development in the North Falkland Basin involving Israeli company Navitas and British partner Rockhopper.
Argentina argues that such projects violate calls against unilateral economic activity in the disputed territory.
The move adds an economic dimension to Milei’s sovereignty campaign at a time when offshore energy resources are increasing the strategic importance of the islands.
The president also announced additional resources for Argentina’s Defence Ministry, prioritizing construction of an integrated naval base in Tierra del Fuego.
Construction of the base began in 2022, before Milei entered office, but its development could strengthen Argentina’s logistical and military presence at the southern edge of the country.
Britain Rejects Any Change
London maintains that the sovereignty question is settled by the wishes of Falkland Islanders.
The British government said this week that its position remained “longstanding and unwavering,” stressing that the islanders’ right to self-determination was paramount.
That remains the central difference between the two governments.
Britain points to the 2013 referendum in which 99.8% of participating islanders voted to remain a British overseas territory.
Argentina rejects the application of self-determination to the dispute and maintains that Britain unlawfully occupies Argentine territory.
Milei reinforced that position in his address with an unequivocal declaration: “The Malvinas are Argentinian.”
Falklands Returns to Argentine Politics
Milei’s stronger emphasis on the islands represents a notable political shift.
He previously attracted controversy in Argentina for expressing admiration for Margaret Thatcher, the British prime minister during the 1982 Falklands War. His more assertive sovereignty campaign has emerged as reports of possible changes in Washington’s approach have intensified.
It also comes at a difficult moment domestically.
Milei is expected to seek re-election next year while facing declining popularity, corruption allegations involving members of his government and continued economic pressure. His austerity program has reduced inflation, but unemployment and poverty have increased.
Critics therefore accuse the president of elevating the Falklands dispute partly to redirect political attention from domestic problems.
Whatever Milei’s domestic calculations, Trump’s unpredictability has introduced a new element into a dispute that has remained largely frozen for decades.
There is still no American recognition of Argentina’s sovereignty claim, and Britain has given no indication that it intends to negotiate away control of the islands.
But Milei clearly believes the international environment is changing.
For Buenos Aires, even uncertainty over Washington’s traditional position represents something Argentina has rarely had in the Falklands dispute: a potential diplomatic opening.
