Somaliland–Ethiopia Relations Deepen as President Irro Begins Official Working Visit

President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Irro) of the Republic of Somaliland has arrived in Addis Ababa for an official working visit to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, marking a major step in the deepening strategic partnership between the two neighboring nations.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, underscores Somaliland’s evolving diplomatic posture and its commitment to advancing cooperation on security, trade, infrastructure, and regional stability.

Aboard a special presidential flight, President Irro led a high-level delegation including key ministers — Foreign Affairs, Presidency, Finance, Public Works, and Investment — as well as the Chief of the National Armed Forces and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency.

The composition of the delegation highlights the visit’s strategic weight and the breadth of cooperation expected to be discussed.

During his stay in Addis Ababa, President Irro is scheduled to hold a series of high-level meetings with senior Ethiopian officials, focusing on the consolidation of long-standing bilateral ties, the expansion of trade and connectivity, and the reinforcement of joint security frameworks across the Horn of Africa.

Diplomatic observers note that the timing of the visit reflects Somaliland’s determination to cement its regional alliances amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The Irro administration’s proactive engagement with Ethiopia is seen as part of a broader effort to enhance Somaliland’s international visibility and project its role as a stabilizing force in an increasingly volatile region.

The visit also signals a continuation of Somaliland’s balanced foreign policy, seeking pragmatic cooperation with regional partners while safeguarding its sovereignty and pursuing recognition on the international stage.

In diplomatic circles, the visit is being described as a “strategic reset” — one that could reshape trade corridors, strengthen counterterrorism coordination, and reinforce Somaliland’s position as a key gateway between the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea.
