Three of Israel’s closest allies — the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia — have formally recognized a Palestinian state. The announcements, coordinated just 24 hours before the United Nations General Assembly, mark a seismic diplomatic rupture, with two G7 powers now openly endorsing Palestinian statehood while Israel remains at war with Hamas.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered the most symbolic blow, declaring on camera that his country was acting “to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution.” Across the Atlantic, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney echoed the message, while in Canberra, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described recognition as “the only path to enduring peace.” All three insisted Hamas must be excluded from any future Palestinian state.
Israel’s response was furious. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office denounced the decision as “an absurd reward for terrorism,” while Religious Zionist Party MK Zvi Sukkot urged full Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank.
Families of Israeli hostages accused Starmer of “dramatically complicating” efforts to free captives still held in Gaza. Polling suggests the British public isn’t convinced either: nearly 90 percent oppose recognition without conditions, with just 13 percent backing Starmer’s move.
The political calculus is fraught. Starmer, who spent last week welcoming U.S. President Donald Trump to London, now finds himself openly at odds with the White House.
Trump reiterated his opposition on Monday, warning the UK that recognizing Palestine while Hamas still controls Gaza “rewards monstrous terrorism.” Reports suggest London is preparing new sanctions on Hamas to soothe U.S. anger, but the damage may already be done.
The coordinated Western recognition comes as Israel wages its 23-month campaign in Gaza, displacing millions and drawing international condemnation.
To Israel, the recognition is not only premature but a direct betrayal: legitimizing Palestinian statehood while rockets still fall on its cities, and while hostages remain in underground tunnels.
To Palestinians, it is being hailed as “historic” and “long overdue,” correcting what Husam Zomlot, the Palestinian envoy in London, called “Britain’s colonial wrongs.”
The stakes are massive. If more Western powers follow the UK, Canada, and Australia, Israel could find itself more isolated diplomatically than at any time since 1948. And with Trump backing Israel while Europe fractures, the stage is set for a transatlantic rift that could reshape Middle East diplomacy for a generation.
