Minnesota Court Orders Nolosha to Repay Somali-American Families Over Failed Housing Project

A Minnesota judge has ruled against Nolosha Development and its CEO, Abdiwali Abdullahi, ordering repayment to Somali-American families after a housing project failed to deliver promised homes. The Lakeville-based development, marketed as a culturally tailored community featuring halal financing and faith-compliant amenities, collapsed without securing land, permits, or financing.

Judge Christian Sande’s ruling followed a civil fraud lawsuit brought by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who cited multiple violations of consumer protection laws. At least 160 families paid deposits up to $25,000 each, totaling over $1 million. However, investigations revealed that Nolosha never owned the site, failed to obtain necessary approvals, and never commenced construction.

This case underscores the risks faced by immigrant communities pursuing economic opportunities through niche developments. Despite the appeal of culturally sensitive housing models, weak governance, lack of transparency, and poor project management have left many vulnerable. The project’s failure also highlights systemic challenges in minority-led real estate ventures, emphasizing the need for stronger regulatory oversight and consumer protections.

The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office continues its efforts to secure full restitution for affected families while the FBI investigates potential criminal misconduct. The Nolosha case serves as a cautionary tale about the economic and social costs of unfulfilled promises and fraudulent schemes targeting minority investors.
