Pyongyang Reacts to U.S. Military Support for South Korea Amid Rising Tensions
North Korea has unleashed a barrage of threats against the United States, warning of “serious consequences” following Washington’s recent military support for South Korea, including the sale of Apache attack helicopters. This dramatic escalation comes in the wake of Vice President Kamala Harris’ scathing condemnation of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom she labeled a “tyrant” during a fiery speech at the Democratic National Convention.
Pyongyang’s latest salvo was a direct reaction to the U.S.-South Korean military maneuvers and arms deals that have intensified tensions on the Korean Peninsula. In a statement released by the Department of Press and Information of the DPRK Foreign Ministry, North Korea accused the U.S. and South Korea of engaging in “recklessly provocative” actions that exacerbate regional instability. The statement sharply criticized the “arms buildup” and joint military exercises, describing South Korea as a “vassal force” and the U.S. as an instigator of conflict.
The timing of North Korea’s warning is particularly notable. Just hours before the statement, Kamala Harris took to the stage at the Democratic National Convention, vowing to confront threats from Iran and other adversaries while deriding Kim Jong Un as a “dictator” with hostile intentions. Her remarks, made during a highly charged political event, added fuel to the already simmering tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.
The ongoing U.S.-South Korean military exercises, dubbed “Ulchi Freedom Shield,” are designed to simulate a range of defensive scenarios, including missile attacks and cyber threats. The U.S. Air Force has also deployed an RC-135W Rivet Joint reconnaissance plane to monitor North Korean reactions to these developments.
In response to the mounting tensions, North Korea has vowed to undertake “necessary military activities” to address what it perceives as an increasing threat from the U.S. and South Korea.
