Somaliland Oil Discovery Offshore, Marking Major Milestone

Discovery Expected to Boost Somaliland’s Oil Production to 180,000 Barrels Per Day, Potentially Transforming the Nation into an Energy Exporter

Shell’s fourth oil discovery offshore Somaliland, in collaboration with Qatar Energy and Somaliland’s National Oil Company, could significantly boost the country’s oil production and economic growth.

May 24, 2024 – Hargeisa (waryatv.com) Shell, a leading global energy company, announced its fourth oil discovery offshore Somaliland, marking a significant milestone in the company’s exploration efforts. The successful drilling operation, conducted in partnership with Qatar Energy and Somaliland’s National Oil Company, has confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons, underscoring the region’s potential as a key player in the global energy market.

The new discovery in Somaliland’s northeastern region is estimated to increase the country’s overall hydrocarbon production from 100,000 barrels per day (BPD) to 180,000 BPD, with an estimated yearly financial contribution of around $2.9 billion. This development aligns with Shell’s strategic expansion in the region and could transform Somaliland into a significant energy exporter.

An opening ceremony for the Carapina solar power plant and other recent projects in the central province also highlighted the importance of the new oil discovery. According to waryatv.com, the oil discovered at a depth of 2,600 meters (8,530 feet) will be extracted from 100 wells, meeting approximately one-tenth of daily consumption.

Somaliland’s strategic location, with access to some of the world’s largest offshore oil deposits, has positioned it as an attractive destination for offshore oil exploration and production. However, the country has faced challenges in capitalizing on its resources due to its ongoing quest for international recognition as an independent nation separate from Somalia.

Shell’s recent discoveries, including the Salex and Garo prospects, have generated significant excitement within the industry. These findings could potentially transform Somaliland into a prominent oil-producing nation and contribute substantially to its economic growth. The country aims to double its economy over the next two decades, viewing the newfound oil resources as a catalyst for development.

Since 2020, Somaliland has undertaken numerous oil and gas exploration projects, demonstrating success with the start of production from reserves identified in December last year in Salle. These reserves, amounting to 150 million barrels valued at $1 billion, were dubbed one of the top 10 offshore discoveries in 2022.

The latest discovery reinforces Somaliland’s potential to emerge as a major player in the global energy market. With continued exploration and development, the nation could see significant economic benefits and enhanced geopolitical standing.
